Don’t let the door hit you on your way out, Ellen DeGeneres.
The embattled former talk show host stated this week that she has put her California home on the market and will soon be a ear-round resident of England. DeGeneres, 66, recently vowed to friends that she is “never coming back” to the U.S. due to President-elect Donald Trump’s second victory, TheWrap reported. Although Trump was the catalyst, a friend told the outlet the move will also serve as a “fresh start” for the embattled comedian who has been open about being “kicked out of show business” following allegations of fomenting a “toxic” workplace on the set of her longtime NBC show “Ellen.”
DeGeneres and her wife Portia de Rossi already spend most of the year in the Cotswolds, a swanky hamlet of famous and high-net-worth individuals keen on buying themselves some peace and quiet. Her estate in Montecito, about 90 minutes outside of Los Angeles, is expected to be pocket-listed soon, bringing to an end her time at a property that she purchased as a primary residence in 2019. Riskin Partners, a premier real estate firm managing the sale, did not return a request for comment from the outlet. A former spokeswoman for DeGeneres confirmed she is no longer representing the comedian following the end of “Ellen” in 2022 and the conclusion of her recent tour.
The liberal icon’s brightest light of late came in the form of “Four Your Approval,” a special she produced in partnership with Netflix but which only garnered a 33% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In it, she chronicled her past few years out of the limelight and expressed regret about not setting better expectations for herself. “I decided to take up gardening,” DeGeneres said. “I got chickens. Let me see what else I can tell you about what’s been going on … Oh yeah, I got kicked out of show business … Yeah, the ‘be kind’ girl wasn’t kind. That was the headline.”
She joked: “Had I ended my show by saying, ‘Go f*** yourselves,’ people would have been pleasantly surprised to find out I’m kind.”
After going all-in on Vice President Kamala Harris, a number of A-list celebrities have matched DeGeneres’s promise to flee the U.S. for good. Sharon Stone said recently that she is considering a permanent move to Italy, and singer Cher said she would take “drastic steps” to avoid trips here, the Hindustan Times reported. Minnie Driver, best known for her role as the love interest in “Good Will Hunting,” expressed her desire to return to the U.K. after living in L.A. for over three decades. Whoopi Goldberg, who is currently facing a reckoning for anti-Trump rants at “The View,” hinted that she may set sail, as did rapper and singer Cardi B.
